The man convicted of killing an innocent driver while fleeing from police will spend the next 14 years behind bars. Prosecutors say police tried to pull over now 41-year-old Robert Jones for speeding on February 25 near 24th and Burleigh streets. Jones didn’t stop, ran a red light and smashed into a vehicle at 20th and Burleigh streets, killing the driver, 30-year-old Amari Smith. Police dash camera video of the crash was shown in court Tuesday. “This was not supposed to happen,” Smith’s mother, Shanita Hill, said during her victim impact statement at sentencing Tuesday. “It was the consequences you were supposed to take, not him,” Hill said to Jones. Jones took a plea deal from the state in June.
