Iowa City Community School District unveils timeline to discuss cell phone policy in school [Video]

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa City Community School District decided on a timeline to change its policies on cell phones at school.

Parents and educators will give input on what they think should change over the next three months. The board approved a timeline to consider changes to its phone, artificial intelligence, and technology policies.

The board didn’t give an indication as to what it’s leaning toward in terms of changing the cell phone policy, but the district is inviting community members to read the book “The Anxious Generation.”

It blames cell phones for skyrocketing mental illness among children.

Lisa Williams, a school board member, said she’s glad the timeline will address cell phones sooner rather than later.

”I thought we were gonna have to wait, I think we should have done something in 2023, but I’m super excited to see that 2023 date,” Williams said.

A final decision isn’t expected until October.
