Grant enhances water access for rural Kansas town [Video]

KSNF/KODE — A rural town in southeast Kansas will soon benefit from a grant allowing improved water access.

Caney in Montgomery County is the recipient of a community development block grant, allowing the city to purchase water from nearby Coffeyville.

Approximately one million dollars of funding will go toward the project, which includes installing 14 miles of piping.

The grant comes from the Kansas Department of Commerce, and totals nearly eight million dollars.

The regional water project is being touted as part of the Kansas Water Plan’s mission to address water issues, by investing in infrastructure.

“Rural water, with some of these small communities, infrastructure can get old and so I think we have to have partnerships to increase that access to water. You have to have water to survive out here, and coming out of a drought I think that has been emphasized even more,” said Ben Brubaker, Coffeyville City …
