Dixon Legacy Tennis Tournament takes place in Springfield [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – In Forest Park, the Dixon Legacy Tennis Tournament took place in Springfield.

Judy Dixon, who played on the WTA pro circuit and competed at Wimbledon and the US open, is also one of the original members of the nonprofit Moving On Up, which is where all of this weekend’s proceeds are going towards.

The tournament featured men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Western mass news spoke with Melvin Murray, the president of the board for the tournament, and he claims that this event aims to positively influence lives and support the community through role modeling, integrity, teamwork, and respect.

“Tennis provides an opportunity for kids to get exercise, to go outside. It’s a low-cost sport,” he said. “It provides a sense of community, a sense of achievement, and a sense of athleticism, which is really important.”
