San Diego Senior Games promotes active aging, community [Video]

The 37th annual event in September is for senior athletes ages 50 to 102.

SAN DIEGO — Are you ready for a blast of motivation? More than 1,500 athletes are currently competing in the San Diego Senior Games.

Athletes ages 50 to 102 have competed in the San Diego Senior Games for the past 37 years. Kirsten Cummings, a former professional basketball player, is the executive director of the Olympic-style competition. She shared her message to other seniors reading this article: “Get off the couch, and get on the court.”

She didn’t have to tell 91-year old Staff Walker twice.

In Scripps Ranch at Fitness Quest 10, we watched the 20-year Marine Corps veteran throw his weight around in the bench press competition. After pumping out a set of 20 lifts, we asked Staff how he felt.

“Great,” he said with a huge smile.

His wife, Sandra, is an 84-year old jump rope champion.
