HAUULA (Island News) — A new option remains “in the works” to help keep local residents safe during severe weather conditions.
The town of Hauula is building a massive community center and safe room that’s designed to protect up to 1,500 people through a category five hurricane if necessary.
It’ll be located beyond the extreme tsunami zone on a hilltop near the intersection of Homestead and Kamehameha Highway on Oahu’s North Shore.
Hui O Hauula already has the final environmental assessment completed.
Meanwhile, the planning team is going for a long term lease on the land from the state and applying for permits this summer.
