Logjams in Beaver Creek get restored with helicopter-assisted placement [Video]

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A helicopter helped place dozens of logs in Beaver Creek as part of a habitat restoration project on Tuesday.

Beaver Creek, located near the Sandy River in Multnomah County, supports salmon, steelhead and lamprey. Jonathan Soll with Metro Parks & Nature said these are all ocean-going fish that need plenty of cool, shaded hiding places with slow-moving water.

“We think of the large animals swimming upstream, and that’s an amazing thing, but they lay their eggs in gravel and when these eggs hatch, those fish spend time in the stream and they need places to hide. They need food to eat. These large wood structures are a really important part of that system,” Soll said.

In the past, the logjams happened naturally when large trees fell into creeks.
