Gullah Geechee community fights for green space in historic settlement [Video]

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C (WCSC) – Members of the Gullah Geechee community have concerns about a new proposal development.

The Gullah Geechee community of Hamlin Beach in Mount Pleasant is actively opposing a proposed development, aiming to preserve their historic Black community and its heritage.

Nova Development LLC proposed to develop 41 homes, each priced at $600,000, on a 13.51-acre site on Hamlin Road.

Initially, the zoning called for 20 homes on the property.

However, the Charleston County Zoning Committee denied the proposed plan at the beginning of July.

Community members are fighting for the land to be preserved as green space.

They hope Charleston County will purchase the land to prevent further development and maintain the area’s cultural and environmental integrity.

Community member Cassandra Davis explained the historical significance and continuity concerns of the area.

“This community was established in 1881. And so, we are trying to keep a continuity …
