CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Pathways to Empowerment held its first-ever event with Trident United Way’s African American Leadership Council.

The AALC hosted about 50 black teens ages 13-18 to hear from a panel of speakers and their experiences.

The panel consisted of North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess, Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker, Berkeley County Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon and former mayoral candidate and Lt. Colonel Clay Middleton.

Burgess says this seminar is much more than an opportunity to connect.

“It’s truly about saving lives. If we can give these young people realistic problem-solving techniques and skills, when the time comes for them where they are up against the wall, they know they can get out of that situation,” Burgess said.

After the panel, there were break-out groups for more one-on-one questions the young men may have.
