MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -Several youth groups and community advocates are calling for answers on the plan to move control of the Youth Justice and Education Center from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to Juvenile Court.
Earlier this year, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner announced he wants to give up control of the juvenile jail facility and turn the operation over to Juvenile Court by the end of the year.
Both sides say a successful transfer will take longer.
The Youth Justice Action Coalition along with other groups hosted a news conference today right outside of the Shelby County Jail pushing for answers on how the transition will work.
The group says the transfer will have consequences for the youth already in the detention center, the families of those in detention, and the overall safety of Shelby County.
