A young father died protecting his children in a Friday night carjacking in Trenton, the city’s mayor confirmed Saturday afternoon.
On Friday at about 10:20 p.m., city officials received reports of an accident with an overturned vehicle near Garfield and Farragut Avenues, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release. On the scene, first responders found an overturned white Durango with one male victim inside and two kids, police said.
The man, identified as Johny Emmanuel Cruz-Rodriguez, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities added. The two children, they said, were strapped into their car seats but were unharmed.
According to the prosecutor’s office, witnesses indicated that Cruz-Rodriguez was standing “at the open back of the Durango” when an unidentified suspect entered the car and tried to drive away.
