PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police in Prince George’s County are working to drive down crime through their summer crime initiative.

“The summer crime plan, our operation, is a comprehensive approach,” said Police Chief Malik Aziz. “It is dealing with not only the enforcement aspect of what happens but prevention and community engagement.”

Aziz said the initiative launched in 2021 and has evolved over the years.

Currently, the department is focusing on youth programs, engaging with senior citizens and targeting areas where crime historically rises during the summer.

“We drill down in those places, we find out addresses, locations that have historically driven crime there, we put officers there, we put resources there,” said Aziz.

There’s also a heightened focus on engaging with kids and teens in the county, with the police department offering athletic camps, agility camps, forensic camps and more.
