FRIENDSHIP, Wis. (WSAW) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources stated Monday the so-called “Stairway Fire” at Roche-A-Cri State Park north of Friendship is contained.
The fire sparked on the top of Roche-A-Cri Mound stairway around 3 p.m. on Sunday. There were no reported injuries. The stairway is damaged. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.
The fire burned 6.5 acres. In a press release, the DNR described that the fire was “burning pine in pine needles and leaf litter with minimal torching to trees.” Ten area fire departments were working with DNR fire crews Sunday evening using hoses and hand lines to build containment lines.
