Winston-Salem looking for volunteers for annual homeless count [Video]

The city of Winston-Salem is looking for volunteers for the annual Point In Time Count.It’s a count of the unsheltered homeless in the community.The count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.Leaders in the city’s Neighborhood Services Division say the goal is to help people, and volunteers will leave with a whole new view of what it means to be homeless in our community.The count gives city officials an idea of how many unsheltered homeless are in Winston-Salem to see if that number has increased over the past year. This way, they can see if they have enough shelter space. It also determines how much federal funding the city will receive.Many of these folks are hard to find so volunteers are led by outreach workers who know the areas where unsheltered homeless set up tents.
