LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen struck out again in his quest to provide Nebraskans with “transformational” property tax reductions.
Four months ago, he came up empty handed at the end of the regular legislative session. On Tuesday, a special legislative session ended with legislation easing property taxes an average of 3% statewide and capping property tax collections by cities and counties.
It was a far cry from Pillen’s original special session plan to cut property tax bills 50% by having the state take over operations funding for public schools and capping local tax collections. The plan would have imposed or increased sales and sin taxes on more than 100 goods and services and created a massive change in who pays taxes and how.
