The Syracuse-born actor crushed the box office with blockbusters like “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible,” worked with Hollywood legends like Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman, and earned three Oscar nominations himself for his work in “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire” and “Magnolia.” But in the last decade something changed.

Blame the Internet for killing “our last real movie star,” one author says of Cruise.

Amy Nicholson, whose upcoming book “Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor” hits stores in July, traces the change in his star power to three things: YouTube, online journalism and a couch. She tells L.A. Weekly that all three of those forces converged in May 2005, when Cruise famously declared his love for Katie Holmes on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Her preview of Cruise’s biography describes how the 51-year-old actor initially shied away from the spotlight when “Risky Business” hit it big in 1983. …
