Westbrook, Maine fuel spill in Presumpscot River [Video]

WESTBROOK, Maine — Emergency officials responded Friday morning to the Presumpscot River in the area of Knight Street in Westbrook following a report about a large fuel spill.

Officials worked to mitigate the spill by deploying a fuel absorbent boom across the river to prevent the oil from spreading, the Westbrook Fire Department said in a social media post.

Crews located the source of the spill shortly before 9:30 a.m. Westbrook Fire Chief Steve Sloan told NEWS CENTER Maine it came from a storm drain in the area of Reserve Street. 

As of 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sloan said officials had stopped oil from entering the river. Officials had not yet determined the exact source of the oil or how many gallons had gone into the river.
