Cooper spoke alongside emergency management officials to provide an update on severe weather moving through the state. Now-Tropical Storm Helene made landfall as a major hurricane on Thursday night, and moved north into the Carolinas early Friday morning.
Cooper said two people have died since the storm hit the state: One due to a crash in Catawba County, and one due to a tree falling on a home in Charlotte.
Heavy rain and strong winds moved across North Carolina on Friday, hitting the mountains and foothills particularly hard. Flood warnings and watches were active across the state, while areas in the western-most region were experiencing significant flooding.
