Washington County comes together to support a paralyzed volunteer firefighter | News [Video]

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — The Washington County community came together at the Bartlesville Elks Lodge to support Cody Hazelwood, a 20-year-old volunteer firefighter who was paralyzed in a vehicle accident while responding to a call.

“Cody is one of our firefighters,” said Oglesby Fire Chief Jerry Wade. “He had such a strong interest in the fire service. His goal in life was maybe move on, maybe go to one of those paid departments.”

Cody’s life unexpectedly shifted on Aug. 15 when he got into an accident while responding to an emergency call and became paralyzed from the waist down.

Wade said, “Cody had his wreck and we were the ones [who] responded to it. It hurts when it’s one of your own.”

Even though his life has changed, Cody said his vision remains the same.

“I have a hell of a family and an amazing girlfriend,” Cody stated.
