The 2025 Volvo XC40 Recharge small SUV has made a major change. The entry-level variant of the fully electric vehicle, dubbed Plus, remains available with a single electric motor, but it’s now mounted on the rear axle instead of the front. As such, it promises sportier rear-wheel-drive dynamics, which is good news for driving enthusiasts in the segment.
As before, the XC40 Recharge goes tyre to tyre with the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA and Lexus UX300e, among others. But this time around the Plus sends 170kW of power and 330Nm of torque to its rear wheels, while its 69kWh battery delivers a modest WLTP-rated driving range of 435km.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White spends three weeks living with the new XC40 Recharge Plus to find out how well it measures up in day-to-day life. Point being, can it be your daily driver? Watch on to find out.
