UT Medical Center issues visitor restrictions due to flu [Video]

Visitors under 12 and anyone exhibiting signs of illness such as a cough, congestion or upset stomach, are restricted from visiting patients unless seeking care.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee Medical Center is restricting visitors due to increased flu activity in the community. 

Starting Monday, visitors under 12 and anyone exhibiting signs of illness such as a cough, congestion or upset stomach, are restricted from visiting patients unless seeking medical care. The medical center established the restrictions after consulting its epidemiologist, Dr. Shorman.  

According to the Tennessee Department of Health, doctor visits for flu-like illnesses and confirmed lab reports of flu cases were on the rise the week of Dec. 15. Health officials say Tennessee is now considered a very high-risk state for flu-like symptoms.
