AURORA, Colo. (KKTV) – The Aurora Police Department released an edited video briefing showing the details of the May 23 officer-involved shooting.

In the video, Interim Aurora Police Chief Heather Morris narrated the briefing and discussed why the Aurora Police Department (APD) used force resulting in the death of 37-year-old Kilen Lewis.

The Aurora Police Department said the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting to determine if the officer’s actions followed state law.

Lewis’ family filed a lawsuit against the APD, and around 10 a.m. Thursday morning, Lewis’ law firm held a press conference to cover the events that took place in the police department’s briefing. This briefing was broadcast live on Facebook.

“Concurrently, the Aurora Police Department’s Internal Investigations Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation of the entire incident assessing compliance with agency policies and training,” said the Aurora Police Department.
