A national retailer could be moving into the old Kmart building in Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) – A national retailer could be moving into the old Kmart building in Columbus.

Kmart closed in November of 2018, and the 110,000-square-foot building off Highway 45 North has been unused since.

It sits on a 14-acre lot.

Columbus Mayor Keith Gaskin held a weekly press conference and shared what is to come as the Golden Triangle Development LINK brings in more projects.

“The potential buyer is a national retailer,” Gaskin said. “Who will use 90,000 square feet and renovate the remaining 20 square feet for another retailer.”

Mayor Gaskin said this is a capital investment of $8 million, with this unnamed retailer providing 60 to 70 new jobs.

The jobs will include full and part-time positions.

The announcement of the national retailer will be in early October.

Construction is slated to begin in 2025, according to Golden Triangle Development LINK COO Meryl Fisackerly.
