Unity walk aims to reduce violence in Grand Rapids [Video]

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids community members and police officers came together Saturday, united by a common goal: to reduce violence.

The “Stop the Hate, Stop the Violence” event, organized by Uptown Church and Seeds of Promise, included a unity walk, remarks and a public prayer.

“We want to end the violence in Grand Rapids, drastically reduce the crime rate in Grand Rapids,” said Seeds of Promise co-founder Ronald Jimmerson. “And in order to do that, it’s going to take partnership with many different organizations….It takes a whole city. We’ve got the police department, the fire department — I mean, we partner with everyone.”

At Rosa Parks Circle, many gathered to share stories of how violent crime has touched their lives. Signs bore messages like “Love not hate,” and many photos were displayed around the city center.
