MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Two Northeast Louisiana communities have been awarded a 2024 AARP Community Challenge grant.

The City of West Monroe was awarded a $20,000 Flagship Grant to rehabilitate the Sunken Gardens at Kiroli Park.

The city expressed its excitement in a social media post saying in part, “We are thrilled to be able to start the rehabilitation of the Sunken Gardens…”

Education Today Group (ETG), a non-profit organization in Tallulah, was awarded a $15,000 Flagship Grant. The organization aims to create a mobile tech classroom where they will host training sessions on smartphone and laptop use for older adults. ETC hopes the training will help older citizens feel more independent and reduce feelings of loneliness.

According to AARP, they received more than 3,350 applications. Ultimately 343 projects were chosen to receive funding.
