A social media influencer has come under massive fire for sharing a picture alongside Taliban fighters during her recent visit to Afghanistan. Somali-American internet personality Marian Abdi, known by the username Geenyada Madow online, shared a carousel of photos and videos taken in Kabul, Bamyan, and other Afghan cities on her social media channels. Dressed in a full-length burqa, Abdi was seen smiling beside the members of the militant group.

As soon as the photo surfaced online, internet sleuths were quick to highlight the erasure of women from public places at a time, when millions of girls were denied education, jobs, and other basic rights in the country. It appeared troubling and unacceptable for many to watch Abdi lobbying for the Taliban as the militant group’s action disregards the suffering and pain of Afghani women, who face oppression and persecution under their hardline regime.
