PALM COAST, Fla. (WFLA) — Otis, a juvenile green sea turtle was released back into the Atlantic Ocean after six months of care at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Apollo Beach.
Otis was released back into the Atlantic from Washington Oaks Gardens State Park in Palm Coast.
With a grant from Verizon and a collaboration with the Sea Turtle Conservancy, Otis was released with a satellite tag attached to his shell so biologists and the community could track his travels and gather data, according to The Florida Aquarium.
“We thrive to ensure that they thrive in their natural environment. By monitoring post-release behavior through satellite tags, we gather critically important information that helps us better understand their activity patterns and environmental preferences, tracking their success and ultimately building out future rehabilitation and conservation efforts,” said Ashley Riese, Director of The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program.
