AUSTIN, Minn.-Three Rivers Community Action held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of a 3 year affordable housing project, 1st and 3rd Apartments, on Monday, Oct. 28.
Around 20 renters have already moved into the new 40 unit building, and according to Laura Helle, the nonprofit’s housing development director, over 150 applicants are already in the running for the other half of the complex.
The new units are a mix of 1,2,3 and 4 bedroom apartments which the non-profit says are meant to accomodate a mix of low income families of various sizes.
Three Rivers said a big reason for that mixed design is to attract new workers to the community.
“In Austin the community is really focused on attracting and retaining that workforce and having appropriate housing is just a cornerstone of that,” Helle said.
