The W.Va. Division of Highways attacks potholes for the winter [Video]

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – The W.Va. Division of Highways is working to patch potholes before summer comes.

According to the press release from the W.Va. Division of Transportation, potholes form when water gets into cracks in the road, then freezes and expands. Constant freezing and thawing over the winter widens the cracks until they turn into potholes.

Most potholes come up during the winter months. The W.Va. DOH has very few options to fix potholes when temperatures drop.

The best method to fix a pothole is to mill out the area around the pothole in a rectangle shape about two inches deep. Once the hole is cleared out, a layer of tack is applied to help the asphalt adhere better. Hot asphalt is placed in the hole and tamped down with a roller. If properly done, the patch will last for years and be virtually undetectable to drivers.
