The decision to appoint Hinano Rodrigues to the Commission on Water Resource Management didn’t sit well with many on Maui. Activists are worried about his intentions and argue that Hawaiian people deserve better.

MAUI, Hawai’i (Island News) — Some are worried for West Maui waters after Hinano Rodrigues was appointed to the Commission on Water Resource Management.

“Hinano being part of the water commission, ‘a’ole pono (not right),” West Maui kalo farmer Victoria Kaluna-Palafox said.

Kaluna-Palafox and other activists argued Rodrigues prioritizes development interests.

“There was a meeting being held in the community and Hinano made a comment that, well, ‘we gotta help the developers because the developers help us,'” Kaluna-Palafox claimed.

“No, they don’t help us. They only take. I never see anything that they ever gave back to the people.”
