Telcos turn off 3G network [Video]

Telstra and Optus have switched off their 3G networks today, affecting older model phone network devices.

Devices made before 2019 are likely to be impacted, including their ability to connect to emergency services.

This includes tablets, smartwatches, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and medical devices.

Some 4G devices may also be affected. Older 4G devices and those purchased overseas are particularly at risk.

A spokesperson for the Department of Industry said these devices were of particular concern because it would not be obvious they had lost functionality.

“Some may be unable to make any voice calls once a 3G network is switched off. There is also a subset of 4G devices that may continue to operate for voice calls and data but will not be able to make Triple Zero calls,” they said.
