Take steps to better mental health (literally) [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A new study says the number of steps you take every day could lead to fewer depression symptoms.

The study, published in the journal Jama Network Open, found a higher daily step count is associated with fewer depressive symptoms, and taking 1,000 more steps a day could reduce your risk of depression.

The study’s lead author says it’s more evidence that being active is a great strategy for preventing depression. That’s regardless of the type or intensity of the activity you’re doing.

The research reviewed 33 studies involving more than 96,000 adults in all.

Experts acknowledge a lot of people struggle with finding the motivation to exercise. Adding depression on top of that can make it even harder to get started.

Doctors say if setting goals and tracking activity doesn’t work for you, start small: Take a few steps and go from there.
