Suffolk PD warns against phone scammers impersonating cops [Video]

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Scammers impersonating officers with the Suffolk County Police Department have been making fraudulent phone calls to Long Island residents and claiming to have warrants for their arrest. Police are warning the public to be wary.

Detectives are investigating at least three incidents during which a Suffolk County resident was contacted by a caller claiming to be with law enforcement, police said in a press release.

After making contact, the scammers claims to have an arrest warrant for the resident who answers, and asks the victim to send them money. Detectives are not aware of any residents who have followed through on the request and sent money to the callers.

“Police will NEVER demand money in lieu of arrest or consequence,” Suffolk County Police said in a press release.

Victims of the scam said that the frauds called from what appeared to be legitimate phone numbers from the police department.
