Sturgis Public Library hosts event to raise awareness for braille [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Center for Disease Control estimates six million Americans have vision loss and one million Americans are blind and the Sturgis Public Library hosted a Christmas card-making event to raise awareness for braille on Saturday.

Braille is a system of touch reading and writing where raised dots signify each letter of the alphabet. It is universal and used across the globe, but only 10 percent of people who are legally blind use it daily.

Chris Rother is the grandmother of 11-year-old Eekiah Beug who has been blind since birth, has organized multiple events to send cards with braille to fire departments, Cornerstone Rescue Mission, and other community members in hopes of piquing someone’s interest in braille.

“Through these events, we’re hoping that just one person would be interested and not be intimidated by people that are blind or by Braille, and not to be intimidated by other foreign things,” said Rother.
