RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County School District, alongside Strengthen our Community, will be giving a community update on chronic absenteeism on Thursday.
The discussion will focus mainly on the seven root causes identified in the rise of chronic absenteeism and how they plan to target each of these. One of the main goals of this collaboration is to put at least one community and school representative into every middle school by the end of next school year.
Chronic absenteeism has become one of the more severe and complex issues to deal with in the Washoe County School District. Typically, students miss 1 to 2 months of school cumulatively in a school year. However, in most cases, kids are missing much more.
Executive Director of Strengthen our Community, Mike Kazmierski, went on to say, “Chronic Absenteeism is not a school district problem, it’s all of our problems.”
