The 5000 Families pilot program would provide rental assistance for qualifying homes.

NORFOLK, Va. —

A new bill proposed by Virginia state Sen. Mamie Locke is looking to provide relief for families in the Commonwealth that struggle to pay rent.

SB832 would establish the “5000 Families” pilot program, which would provide rental assistance for qualifying homes. Brian Koziol, the Executive Director of the Virginia Housing Alliance, said the plan would help many Virginians if passed.

Koziol said hundreds of thousands are eligible for rent relief, but 5000 families will be chosen, hence the program’s name.

To qualify for the program, households would need to have at least one person 16 or younger and an annual income that does not exceed 50% of the area median income of where they live. Qualifying incomes for our area are listed below.

  • Norfolk: $31,191
  • Chesapeake: $46,316.50
  • Virginia Beach: $45,570.50
  • Suffolk: $40,577
  • Hampton: $35,119
