Spartanburg City Council approves affordable housing [Video]

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Spartanburg City Council has unanimously approved the development of single-family affordable homes.

The council said they are transferring nine vacant properties to Oak and Ave Property Group.

The homes will be sold to buyers at or below 80% of Spartanburg’s area median income.

The transferred properties are scattered throughout the city’s northside and Saxon-Farley neighborhoods. The real estate was largely acquired after the 2008 financial crisis.

“The northside community was decimated in 2008 during the financial collapse, over 80 percent of the lots in that neighborhood were vacant at the time, so this is part of the northside transformation plan to bring back some housing to that neighborhood and to make sure it’s affordable,” said Christopher George, the communications manager for the City of Spartanburg.
