Coalition hosts memorial walk and ceremony at Freemason Street Baptist Church.
NORFOLK, Va. — In honor of National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, members from the Southeastern Virginia Homeless Coalition hosted a remembrance walk and a ceremony here at the Freemason Street Baptist Church.
This is an annual event that is held on the longest night of the year — that is, winter solstice. It’s a call to action by remembering those who have died while homeless and those who are still struggling. Norfolk Community Services Board’s Housing & Homeless services program manager, Marla Robinson, says 40 homeless people have died over the past year.
“The goal of today’s event is to bring awareness to our city to see that people are truly experiencing homelessness and how we as a city we need to come together and we need to help provide things like affordable housing for those individuals,” said Robinson.
