South Vermillion School District changed it’s application requirements to attract more substitute teachers | News [Video]

SOUTH VERMILLION, Ind. (WTHI) – The need for substitute teachers has reached dire levels at the South Vermillion Community School District. Now, the district is trying to find new ways to attract applicants.

“In the 2023-2024 school year, we had over 600 subs positions that went unfilled, which meant we had to cover that within each building, and that was a big challenge for us.”

Melanie Beaver with South Vermillion says the district currently has 125 teachers and only 27 active substitutes within all four of its schools.

Beaver says substitute educators play a vital role in maintaining both academic and operational continuity.

However, with too few substitute teachers available, teachers like Tori Kilgore have to rely on support staff to cover classes.
