Sonic boom expected Monday | wtol.com [Video]

The sonic boom will occur once the aircraft reaches supersonic speeds.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Residents in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan could hear a loud noise – a sonic boom – Monday afternoon while airmen conduct a functional flight check, the 180th Fighter Wing said.

In a press release and social media post, the 180th, which is based out of Swanton, said the flight check will occur between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. around Toledo and Bowling Green. The flight check will involve aircraft reaching supersonic speeds, breaking the sound barrier and causing a sonic boom.

Though the flight will occur above and altitude of 30,000 feet, the 180th said residents across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan may hear the boom.

The 180th said airmen conduct functional flight tests after heavy maintenance is done on the aircraft. The tests are intended to ensure all systems of the aircraft are fully functional before it’s returned to operational rotation.
