SOMA Laboratory have revived the LYRA-4, a smaller and more portable version of its LYRA-8 ‘organismic’ drone synthesizer (read our 2017 review here). Despite its compact size, LYRA-4 packs a powerful punch and retains the rugged build quality of its predecessor. SOMA say its unique design and modular interactions mimic the behaviour of living organisms, creating a dynamic and expressive musical experience that sets it apart from traditional synthesizers.
At the heart of LYRA-4 are four generators, referred to as “voices,” which differ from conventional VCOs. These voices behave more like the tone generators found in vintage electric organs, incorporating a certain degree of non-linearity in their design. The voices are arranged in two pairs (1-2 and 3-4) and can operate in either electric organ mode or FM synthesis mode.
