SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office released the cause of death for one of the three accused gunmen charged in the 2022 mass shooting on Sacramento’s K Street who died at the Sacramento County Main Jail.
Smiley Martin died from a methadone overdose, according to the coroner’s office. Methadone is a medication used to treat opioid addiction, according to the CDC. It’s unclear where he got methadone. ABC10 reached out to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office who said they couldn’t release information due to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Martin died Saturday, June 8.
In an earlier press release, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies discovered the 29-year-old inmate unresponsive in his jail cell before sunrise.
Deputies reportedly tried to administer first aid but eventually called in the Sacramento Fire Department. Medics pronounced the inmate dead around 2:15 a.m. The sheriff’s office is conducting the inmate death investigation.
