If you’re from the Sioux Empire and spent time inside a roller rink during the 70s, 80s, 90s, or 2000s chances are it was at Carousel Skate, now known as Skate City.

Skate City turned 50 years old in 2024.

Carousel Skate has a storied history in Sioux Falls from the early 70s through the mid-2010s.

Carousel Skate was first opened in Sioux Falls in 1974. For the great majority of its years, it was owned and operated by Chris Erickson.

Erickson told Dakota News Now, it feels like deja vu looking back at what skating has meant to the Sioux Falls community.
