PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Are you seeing a dark cloud of smoke looming over parts of the West Valley? You’re not alone.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management is currently working on the Tres Rios RX project, where officials are conducting a prescribed burn south of Tolleson on Wednesday. The fire is currently burning near 91st and Southern avenues.

Forestry officials say the project is aimed to reduce dense vegetation around the Tres Rios Wetlands, along with protecting wetlands and wildlife habitats. The prescribed burn also diminishes the fire hazard to nearby buildings and communities.

In addition, forestry officials are providing prescribed fire training to the Phoenix Fire Department.
