Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed to NBC News that her husband had recently received threats, though it’s unclear if these were connected to the morning’s events.

As the investigation unfolds, local security experts are weighing in on the tragedy. Jameson Ritter, former leader of a threat management team at UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, emphasized the importance of prior planning and credible threat assessment. 

“There’s usually a middle ground based on intelligence, risk assessment, and threat assessment to determine if we’re at an elevated risk for a particular person,” Ritter said. “If so, we adjust our security accordingly.”
