Two scientists who are very interested in finding aliens think that artificial intelligence (AI) might help us communicate with them. In an article for Scientific American, SETI Institute astronomer Franch Marchis and NASA researcher Ignacio G. Lopez-Francois suggested using AI to help with “messaging extraterrestrial intelligence” (METI).
METI involves sending pictures, music, and other data into space to try to communicate with aliens. NASA has done this before with the Voyager probes. The scientists believe that using something as interactive as an AI large language model (LLM) could make this process even better. They think an AI could speak for us and answer questions about humans when aliens interact with it in real time.
The scientists said that some open-source AI models, like those made by Meta and Mistral, might already be good enough to act as our representatives.
