Scammers using AI to clone voices: How to protect yourself and your information [Video]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Impersonation scams are not new, but artificial intelligence is making them more realistic and easier to fall for than ever before.

“Historically they had to manually go out and steal credit cards,” cybersecurity expert Dr. Thomas Hyslip said. “Now with AI they can take what they already have and use that to enhance their ability to commit fraud.”

Dr. Hyslip spent more than two decades in federal law enforcement with the Secret Service and the Department of Defense. Now he works as an assistant professor in cybercrime.

“It’s really enabled criminals to take the next step where they can mimic other people,” he said.

Experts say this type of scamming is on the rise.

Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services predicts that generative AI could enable fraud losses to reach $40 billion in the United States by 2027. That’s up from $12.3 billion in 2023.
