The upcoming Pittsburgh women’s USL soccer team has its name.
The Pittsburgh Riveters, inspired by the Pittsburgh-born “Rosie the Riveter” WWII-era poster, is the name of the new team.
The logo incorporates the famous symbol of female empowerment that was created by an employee at Westinghouse, J. Howard Miller.
The team name was decided through a “community-wide ‘Name the Team’ poll.”
Multiple people suggested the name and, in the poll, won 53 percent of the almost 10,000 votes cast.
“Rosie the Riveter is more than just an image from our past, she’s a symbol of what we believe in as an organization,” said Jeff Garner, President of Pittsburgh Riveters SC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. “The resilience, unity, and courage she represents are the same traits we want our players and fans to embrace as we embark on this new chapter for Pittsburgh sports.
