Saraland officials say non-native material found while working on new Sportsplex [Video]

SARALAND, Ala. (WKRG) — The general contractor for the City of Saraland’s new sportsplex has uncovered non-native soil while working on the property, leading to an investigation, News 5 has learned.

Officials brought in the environmental consulting and engineering firm, PPM Consultants, Inc. to test the area, according to a city press release.

That testing reportedly found that polychlorinated biphenyls was in the area of the non-native soil.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, polychlorinated biphenyls are toxic and can lead to serious health issues.

City officials told contractors to stop work immediately in the area where the soil was located and hired PPM to help the city “in coordinating all remediation efforts with the appropriate regulatory authorities.”
