Safety tips for Trick-or-Treat 2024 [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Each year, Halloween brings a fun night of costumes and candy.

But health officials said with all the toil and trouble — that fun can sometimes turn in a different direction.

“We do see a little uptick in injuries during Halloween,” said Pam Hoogerwerf, Program Manager of Pediatric Injury Prevention and Community Outreach at University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Hoogerwerf said the most serious injury they see on Halloween is kids getting hit by a car.

“You know, it’s usually dark when kids are out trick or treating. They’re anxious and excited and sometimes dart into, you know, driveways when cars may not be thinking about looking behind them, not seeing them,” said Hoogerwerft.

Officer Tom Daubs with the Marion Police Department said adding lights or reflective tape to costumes can help make kids more visible to drivers.
